Municipal Grant Park Stadium / Soldier Field (1922–2001 Original Stadium), Chicago, IL
Soldier Field, originally named Municipal Grant Park Stadium, is located on Chicago’s lakefront and was conceived as a grand civic stadium and war memorial honoring U.S. soldiers who served in World War I. Planning began in the early 1920s as part of the city’s lakefront improvement projects. The original stadium was designed by Holabird & Roche in the Neoclassical style, featuring massive Doric colonnades, limestone façades, and seating for more than 74,000 spectators. Construction began in 1922 and was completed in 1924 at a reported cost of approximately $13 million (over $230 million today), funded by a combination of city appropriations, municipal bonds, and contributions from civic organizations. The structure was built on reclaimed land from Lake Michigan using concrete and steel for the main frame, with Indiana limestone for the decorative exterior. Labor was largely provided by union construction crews, many of whom were Chicago residents, reflecting the city’s skilled trades strength of the era.
Before Soldier Field, the site was part of Chicago’s extensive lakefront parkland—primarily a stretch of Grant Park and adjacent landfill expansion areas that had been developed from dredged lakefill material since the late 19th century. The stadium hosted its inaugural event in 1924 under the name Municipal Grant Park Stadium, but was officially dedicated as Soldier Field on November 27, 1926, during the Army–Navy football game. In the decades following, it became a venue for football, track and field, boxing, political rallies, and concerts, as well as notable historical events like the 1963 Chicago Civil Rights rally and the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
